Ultrasound examinations are non-invasive imaging tests that use sound waves to produce images of the inside of your body. These images are shown on a monitor to show doctors the structure of your body, organs or tissues.
Diagnostic ultrasound is used to help diagnose a wide range of health problems. It can also be used to help guide a biopsy (removing a small piece of tissue to examine in a laboratory) or to monitor the growth of an unborn baby.
A common type of diagnostic ultrasound is abdominal (belly) scans, which are used to help diagnose a variety of problems such as enlarged liver, gallbladder or spleen, abdominal pain and blockages in the bile ducts. It can also be used to help identify stones in the gallbladder, enlarged kidneys and blood clots.
